Long Weekend Recap
So it was a pretty eventful weekend. However, I'm not really inclined to write out a whole multi-page description of what happened, so you're going to have to settle for bullet points.
• Awesome Thanksgiving meals with my future in-laws, and our friends Allie and Pete.
• Board games! Variety, but most memorable: Cranium. Kate and I make a seriously awesome team.
• Call of Duty: World at War. Is it possible to get PTSD from a video game?
• Free weight racks/set/etc. courtesy of @smithersmpls.
• Framebuilding class. Joined a headtube to a downtube and cold-set it. Then made some track dropouts by hand for a near-future project (track bike).

Handmade track dropouts. Design based off of Shimano's.
• The Vikings beat the crap out of the Bears. Too awesome! Wish AP would stop fumbling. Think Sidney Rice might well be the next Cris Carter.
• Did not shop on Black Friday or Cyber Monday (so far). In fact my only material acquisitions during that that timespan are the dropouts I made and the weight set (free).

When you say ‘handmade’…? Did you cut them with a jeweler’s saw or with a milling machine or by paper-composing g-code for a laser cutter?
They look very nice.

Okay, so I took 1/4″ plate steel, traced the outline of Shimano’s track dropouts onto it. Then I cut away most of the steel using a band saw. I then used a sander to get them close to the final shape. Once I had common reference points between the two pieces, I TIG-welded them together at the seam in a few spots to hold them in the same place. The axle slots were cut with a milling machine. I then did the drill-outs (my own design) and countersinking of them using a drill press. I went through and used the sander again to grind them into identical shapes, which also had the benefit of removing the spot welds. The slid right apart after that. Polished them up a bit so they’d look nice for the picture and called it done.

Very cool!
I can’t wait to see them in a frame.
