My Commuting Future

Surly Cross-Check

[If you’re here for more information on commuting by bicycle, try starting with this particular entry.]

Not a lot exciting to report here. Racing season was supposed to kick off on Sunday, but I didn’t make it. There’s an opportunity tonight, but I don’t have the energy for it. I could race on Saturday, but there’s this century ride on Sunday, and it’s my last ride with my friend/riding compadre, Liz, before she heads off for her medical residency in Buffalo (NY) and I never see her again.

Progress on the track bike has stalled — don’t think I’ll be racing the velodrome this year due to financial constraints. Next year, though, it’s definitely happening.

On the other hand, the progress on the commuter bike (pictured above) is coming along nicely. I should have it done in 2-3 weeks and I’m really looking forward to that, especially with gas prices being what they are.

I drive a Subaru Impreza WRX. Small car with a performance engine. My mileage ain’t great, but it’s still not bad, either. Sunday, it cost me $47 to fill my tank. That will get me through a week of driving. That’s unacceptable. So it’s time to start hauling around on the Cross-Check, as soon as I get it done. Expect a full analysis of money spent vs. savings sometime in the next few days.

So the Cross-Check? Good old-fashioned steel cyclocross frame from Surly. It’ll have Shimano XT hubs and rear derailleur, and a Shimano Ultegra 9-speed STI lever as the primary bling points. Everything else will be low- to mid-range parts. Setting it up as a 1×9 (for you non-bike types that’s a single gear in front and nine in back), with gear ratios intended more for efficiency than for outright speed.
