@Angie: Which is exactly why I put point #3 in my statement. If we (cyclists) want to be treated fairly under the law and be treated with respect by other drivers, we need to follow the rules of the road.

People bike everywhere in Austin. There are bike paths, bike lanes, and bike racks on city buses. (Note -- this is my perception as a non-bike rider, so I could be way off base regarding how bike-friendly the place is.) I see several people commuting to and from work in the downtown area everyday, but what I do not see are people on bikes obeying traffic laws. On Thursday, for example, I was the first car at a red light. A guy on a bike came zooming past the cars behind me and stopped in front of me, in the middle of the cross street, and briefly waited for the cars to pass him. Whey they swerved him and passed, he continued on through the light. He then proceeded to swerve in and out of the lanes (on a two way street) as he rode down the street, didn't stop at lights or stop signs, and rode in front of cars that were stopped. This is just an example, and I'm sure that not all bike riders are like this guy, but I can honestly say that I never see people on bikes obeying traffic signals or stop signs in downtown Austin. It is also very common to see people on bikes going the wrong way on a one way street. I am more than happy to share the road with them, but it gets to be dangerous for me, in a car, when these guys are riding this way and I have to take precautions to avoid them.
