Download Day

So I’m shilling for Firefox. I think it’s a great piece of software, and it’s my browser of choice regardless of platform (except my iPod Touch, where I’m stuck with Safari…*gag*). That, and I think the badge is really cute. They ought to make a slightly modified version of this as an icon for the app.

Notes from a Commuter Bike

Bike No Comments »

A few things I noticed over the weekend:

1. Shimano really needs to make the Alfine parts group available for purchase in this country. I don’t want to have to buy an entire Civia just so I can tear the crankset off of it.

2. Bontrager Racelite Hardcase puncture-resistant tires? Aren’t.

On the same subject, I spent a good chunk of yesterday editing some video of the build — I chopped out all the sections where I was doing things like talking to people out-of-frame and so on. Then I sped it up drastically. I managed to cram an hour and 35 minutes of video into three minutes and 43 seconds. Not too shabby. I’m creating some intro, an explanation of what you’re seeing, and an outro. Maybe tonight it’ll be done? We’ll see.

An Update of Sorts

Bike, Fonts, Geek, Life, Writing No Comments »

Last night, as we were falling asleep, Kate admonished me for not updating here since last week. I retorted by rubbing my stubbly legs on her and then admitting that it had been awhile. So here’s what’s up:

Writing. Not much time for it these days. But I did have two cool ideas for books yesterday. The first is a non-fiction work, and the second is a sci-fi re-telling of a modern history story. Both would be a lot of fun to write.

Cycling. If I don’t have to work at the shop tomorrow, I’m going to get the Surly out for a shakedown cruise. Work the kinks out, so I can make with the commuting. Johnny Surprise and I are going to try to get out and hammer this weekend, too. Haven’t seen the dude in a dog’s age.

Fonts. Also stalled. Need to get re-focused on getting the e-commerce engine running, converting some of my old fonts to OpenType and getting them back online for sale. I can always use more money.

Social Life. Picking up a bit. Going to have Jenni and the Cashbox, and some other peeps over for poker night this coming Wednesday. Liz is back in town for, like, a week or something before she heads off to her medical residency in Buffalo, NY, so there’s some drinking, maybe some biking, and some Rock Band in the immediate future.

Moblog. I’m working on a version of this blog for the iPhone/iPod Touch — one that will fill the screen nicely so you don’t have to zoom around like mad to make things quasi-readable. I’ll probably release the Wordpress theme as a free download, too.

Videoblog. I’m working on the first videoblog, and it’s coming along. Hopefully finished this weekend. I need ideas from you guys for topics on upcoming blogs — what sorts of stuff do you want to see?

Friday: Half-Suck, Half Awesome

Uncategorized No Comments »

So I guess the first point of suck on Friday was that someone stole my iPod off my desk at work. How fucking lame is that? The second and third points of suck are small enough to be unworthy of mention.

Awesome? Went and traded-in my PS2 and almost all of my games and got a PS3 and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. The game itself is a little underwhelming, actually, but the graphics, even in 720p, are gorgeous.

I’m about to fuel up here and go crank out a 77.25 mile route. How do I know? It’s over on my Routes page, which I’ve been starting to update.

Happy Saturday!

Thoughts on Videoblogging

Video No Comments »

Videoblogging is hard. Okay, really, it’s not that difficult — it’s just more labor-intensive than normal blogging.

I’ve got a basic script for the first videoblog post, and tonight I do my primary shoot. Post-production may take a little longer, but I have the still imagery put together, so at least that’s out of the way.

I’ve started working with GarageBand in a way that’s meaningful, instead of just noodling around, and have an interesting techno track that’s forming up. Good beat, mixed with strings, piano, synth, and some ambient noise. Going to work in some more elements tonight. I’m really pleased with how it’s coming along and it should work with the script nicely.

Right now, the plan is to start assembling a collection of techno-esque tracks to use in these video pieces. Eventually, I’ll be releasing them as free downloads under the Creative Commons.

The Language of Frustration

Uncategorized No Comments »

As a NCOIC of mine was once fond of saying, “Ah, well, shit on a stick.”

I never understood what a feces-covered tree limb might indicate (other than something anatomically improbable and most likely very painful), but he trucked that gem out when he was frustrated, and currently it seems like an appropriate time to do so.

The wheels, which were supposed to be here today, are not. Woe is me. No new bike build tonight, so I’m opting to work on other things. That reduces the frustration factor somewhat.

Really, my biggest point of contention with the day is that I can remember putting all the ingredients in the crock pot this morning, but I’ll be damned if I can remember whether I turned the thing on.
