Holy Crap

I am so out of shape, it's not even funny. I looked at my ride data from my last ride this morning and I actually felt a little sick to my stomach.

And I'm at the point where I cannot blame illness or just a lack of riding. The thing is, my diet has sucked ass for the last year -- I'm overweight, overly sedentary, and generally so exhausted after a day at the office (worse: a day with office-then-bike-shop), that I'm not of a mind to do anything other than sit on the couch.

My new training plan kicked off yesterday evening with some time at the gym on the weights.

Today, the dietary restrictions have gone into effect. I've arrived at the office, had a 6oz. serving of scrambled eggs, and a low-cal bottle of Sobe Lifewater. Got a Healthy Choice lunch in-hand. After the shop tonight, I'll be doing an hour of Zone 1 (easy spinning).

Looking forward to getting back into the swing of things. And getting rid of this goddamn beer-and-junkfood-gut.

Ignite Minneapolis

I hit up Ignite Minneapolis last night, intrigued because my friend/former co-worker, Kim (@kimberlyoh) was presenting on "How to Write a Novel in 30 Days" -- while there, I ran into a ton of friends and former co-workers, and realized just how small the Minneapolis marketing community is. Ran into Ward and Svetlana from my Findlaw days (Twitter usernames unknown), my friends Jumi (@sparklemotion) and Ashley (@missashe) -- neither of whom I've worked with before, my old boss from ASI, Scott (Twitter username unknown), and a few others. I missed out on meeting @lindsi due to a migraine that started to invade my frontal lobes, and my need to get out of there while I could still drive.

So. Besides the social aspect, a lot of the talks were fascinating and well-presented. Even the ones that were poorly-presented were usually capable of sparking some interesting ideas. (P2P Finance was one of these -- it wasn't well-done, but it sparked some seriously interesting ideas in my head.) We got a mix of ideas, product announcements (a book, and a Twitter knock-off called Yammer), and a few bits of humor (I'm still WTFing about orange, and loved the straight-to-the-point talk about douchebags).

Before my arrival, I was hoping for an environment like the TED Talks. What I got was the TED Talks...with about a hundred marketers standing in the back drinking and networking with little volume control. I'm not against networking, or drinking for that matter, but while people are trying to make a presentation, it's a little obnoxious.

All in all, a good time was had. I've even got an idea for a future presentation, and it's something I'll probably pursue a year or so down the line. Got to give Kim a chance to heckle, after all. Only fair.

Anyone else go? What'd you think? Impressions? Ideas spun-off from the talks? Ideas for your own talk?

A Few Random Things

  1. I got the Ambient Web Metrics device partially built and embedded in this site. There's a write-up here. Every time you visit a page on this site, an angel gets its wings a white LED blinks. Pretty pleased about how it's going, but at the same time, it was supposed to be a while-Kate's-gone project. I'm saving the fine-tuning for that.

  2. Arduino (see "Ambient Web Metrics", above) is pretty awesome.

  3. Some woes with installing the FSA TT chainrings on the crank for my Cervelo. Remember my complaint about the P2C shipping with a compact crank? Well, when boy genius (me) ordered the chainrings, he didn't take into account that the cranks are a 110mm BCD, and the chainrings are a 130mm BCD. Ooops. Put crank for sale on Craigslist and Minneapolis Bike Love. Will roll proceeds into new crank.

Hello Distractions!

So yeah, I haven't been posting here nearly as much as I should. Lots going on lately, between both jobs, Kate's imminent departure for nine weeks, future brother-in-law home from Afghanistan, weather warm enough for biking, etc. You get the idea. Things are crazy.

I've been trying to find things to do while Kate's gone -- I'll need the distraction because I'm going to miss her like mad. Sure, I'll see her on weekends...but during the week, I'll need stuff to do other than biking.

Thus, I've decided that I should learn to do a few things while she's gone. The first thing I'm going to do is to get a cheap homebrew starter kit and start brewing some beer. That alone will be pretty cool. I've also wanted to start doing some light gardening in planter boxes out on our deck -- just small stuff: peppers, spices, and oh, barley, which would be useful for the homebrew fun.

So those are my two big projects during May/June. I'll probably have a few more going in here, but those will be more small-scale and related to things I already know. Things like re-skinning my e-commerce and social networking sites. Putting together a new font. Maybe crank out a couple of short stories. That sort of thing.

Regardless of distractions, it's going to be a tough nine weeks.

My Holy Shit List

So being the weird hybrid geek/marketer type, I've been reading Rands in Repose lately, and found it a fascinating source for information on tech, management, etc. He has a post called Your Holy Shit List, which is something I wanted to write about here today. His HSL is about technology/IT, and while that would be an appropriate topic for this blog, today I'm due to write a bike post, per that schedule I never follow, and I'm sticking with it.

Here's some bike stuff that's made my Holy Shit List.

  • STI shifters (1991)
  • the welds on a Seven Axiom Ti (1999-2000)
  • the Giro Atmos helmet (year unknown)
  • the HED H3 wheel
  • the "new" Trek Madone (2008)
  • Zero Gravity road brakes (2007)

What's on your list?

The Inevitable Journey

After

The first time I made her laugh, I knew I was going to fall in love with her. And then when I did fall in love with her, a few months after our first date, I knew that this was going to be good. Somewhere in those months together, I realized that what we have is a great thing. We moved in together.

And on Sunday, I put a ring on her finger.

Looking back on that moment when she laughed so hard her whole body shook and her eyes lit up, all of this was inevitable.

And I'm looking forward to the rest of our lives.
