More Regular Updates
To put myself onto more of a regular schedule with writing in this blog, I've decided that I'm going to create a writing schedule for this. When I have x amount of time allotted on a day y to talk about topic z, that provides a level of focus that I haven't really had here. The thing is, there are three main topics I want to keep this blog focused on: writing, cycling, and font design. All are important to me. (I'd be very surprised if any combination thereof was interesting to anyone else, however.) At the same time, I want to keep some variety in here, so my schedule allows some flexibility.
Mondays, I will write about writing -- what I have going at the moment, musings on the craft, etc. On Tuesdays, I'll be covering cycling. That will encompass everything from product reviews to race recaps to my training. Wednesdays, I'll talk about font design -- what I'm doing, again musings on that particular craft, and so forth. Thursdays and Fridays, will be my "et cetera" days where I write about whatever interests me at the moment.
In addition, I'll have some regularly scheduled columns. On a monthly basis, I'll bring back the "Challenge Me" post, in which I let my readers assign me with a subject to write about. Every other month, I'll have a "Looking Back" post, revisiting five earlier posts -- cycling, writing, font design, and two "etc" posts -- to see where my opinions/thoughts have changed.
I'm hoping this will help keep me on a regular schedule. I've added it to my Google Calendar and it'll be synced to my iPhone, so that should keep me on-task.
Shitstorm Averted
One of the things I love about Wordpress is that it's relatively easy to upgrade. Download file. Unzip file. Upload resultant files to server while not touching the wp-content folder.
Last night, I also embedded the Last.FM thing in the sidebar, and finally sat down and did a 404 page that blends quantum physics and haiku.
Looking forward to moving to Wordpress 2.5. I'm hoping that that process goes as smoothly as this transition did.
Writing, Bike, Etc.
On the writing front, I seem to have lost momentum via the day lost to the dead logic board in my Mac Mini. That's kinda sucky, but I'm going to force myself to sit in front of the 'ol text editing program for an hour tomorrow -- either I'll write, or I'll waste an hour. One or the other.
On the bike side of things, Zipp finally got my wheels back to me. Only one minor issue -- a dust seal on the cassette hub body was folded over onto itself, exposing the internals -- and I was able to correct that in less than five minutes with a pair of 5mm allen wrenches and a dental pick. Tonight, I'm going to scrub the cassette clean before I re-install it, and get everything back on the Salsa. It looks awfully sad, hanging in the living room with no wheels.
An Update of Sorts
So some searching around, and I finally found a Wordpress template I like enough to modify for use on this site. Some minor graphics tweaks are done, and the next step is to get that little pile of photos in the upper left corner to randomize. My PHP coding is rusty, due to some dalliance with Ruby on Rails, so that's kinda back-burner for now. I did get Akismet up and running, so I shouldn't be inundated with comment-spam anymore. Here's hoping, anyway.
In the realm of the bike, I have finally gotten an arrangement made with Zipp re: the ongoing issues with the rear wheel in my 404 wheelset. I'm dropping that at the UPS store today so it can go and be fixed. I also started ordering the parts for my singlespeed mountain bike, which is going to have to be put on pause, as I (along with several others) lost my job on Monday the 3rd.
Minutiae
- I think I found a WP template that I am going to modify to create the template for this site. Pretty cool.
- Offseason project #1: pursuit bike. No question about this.
- Offseason project #2: single-speed mountain bike? Many questions about this -- need? 26" or 29"? Mix of the two? Huh.
- I still owe a write-up on the Critical Mass stupidity.
- Also, I choke down way too many pills every day. Last count? Eighteen. A dozen and a half pills. All in the name of better health and more optimum performance. (Yes, everything's legal and above-board.)
