My Moment of Insightfulness for This Week

This tidbit came out of my writing in rational debate on Facebook1 — I figure it’s worth sharing here, even if it’s just so that I remember it.

Civilization is borne out of the thin veneer of logic laid over our emotions … That said, given the nature of democracy and the writings that produced ours, it seems that the Founding Fathers were at least somewhat aware of rationalism being the foundation of civility. When we legislate based on emotional states, we start down the road that leads away from a Republic and toward a state that is more like a mob.

Thats my history/diatribe Rain Man moment of the week.
