Training
Until I strike it rich and can afford a full-time coach, I am self-trained. This, I believe, requires a higher level of discipline than having a coach, and requires a much greater attention to detail.
However, I think that with the right program in front of you, and the right mindset, self-training can be as good as a mediocre coach.
Here's the two books I swear by -- The Cyclist's Training Bible and Weight Training for Cyclists. The former, I'm on my second copy of (the first fell apart after years of use), and the latter is something I discovered last season.
Ultimately, if you're going to self-train, you have to find the system that works for you. In my case, Joe Friel's system is extremely detailed and emphasizes methodical and incremental growth over time. This is a big plus for me. Your mileage may vary.
